my husband & i started a church years back. in april 2020 we agreed that my husband start getting a small minister’s pay so we started withholding fica taxes from his paycheck thinking this is the only way it would increase the monthly ss pension he’s receiving. to make long story short the church filed quarterly the 941 & in jan 2021 we filed the w2 & w3. last month our tax preparer informed us & also from your postings its now clear to us that we should not have been withholding fica taxes from his paycheck & filing the 941 for the church. now my question is how do we correct this with the social security office & irs. (we have also been taking out federal withholding from the paycheck). i understand that his salary should have been reported in box 1 just for wages but none for ss & med wages. i would appreciate your input on this. thank you very much. God bless.

Elizabeth, I would contact the Social Security office directly to ask how to go about fixing it. I have not personally gone through this, so if you want to report back to me afterwards I’m sure other readers would benefit, since you are not the first person facing this situation. Another option would be to contact Ascend Business Management at ascendbm.com to see if they may be able to guide you through it.
